Community TB mobile App

Summary

The Tanzania National TB and Leprosy Program (NTLP) and the UDSM DHIS2 team collaborated to develop a DHIS2 based mobile application that enables CHWs to report information about TB screening and lost follow-up patients. Furthermore, the application is integrated with National TB case-based Tracker System (DHIS2-ETL) and that helps to reduce physical visits made by CHWs to health facilities to gather information on diagnostic results of the referred suspects from the community as well as to collect list of lost patients and household contacts of TB patients for lost to follow-up tracing and TB Contact Investigation (TBCI) exercices.

Impact & Output

The application was approved by the NTLP and its implementing partners as a solution for capturing TB cases at the community level and synchronizing with the national DHIS2-ETL system. The application is in pilot stage in Sumbawanga District, whereby CHWs have an opportunity to experience the benefits of this intervention including reduction of physical movements to health facilities, less time for data entry and report generation. As a result, CHWs are currently getting more time for community screening exercises and follow- ups on lost patients. Apart from improving the TB case finding TB and treatment success rate, the intervention plays a significant role in digitally transforming the whole TB cascade of care as recommended by WHO.
