Building Smarter Interns & Practicum Placement System

Across the world, over 70% of training institutions struggle to secure adequate practicum sites, and the WHO projects a 10-million health-worker shortfall by 2030.

In Tanzania, these pressures are increasingly visible across health training institutions, making structured, data-driven placement systems not just a convenience but a strategic imperative.

As technical consultants, the UDSM DHIS2 Lab partnered with the Ministry of Health and sector stakeholders to drive a comprehensive requirements-gathering process for the new national PPMIS practical placement module.

The workshop brought together universities, regulators, and training institutions to unpack current allocation workflows and align on a standardized digital placement pathway that ensures fairness, compliance, and transparency—supporting the thousands of students placed annually across health training facilities in Tanzania

This initiative positions the country to strengthen its training pipeline, boost oversight, and align with global benchmarks for practicum governance.
