Strengthening Global DHIS2 Innovation: UDSM DHIS2 Lab Hosts UiO Extensibility Team for Developer Sync

On 21st May 2025 the UDSM DHIS2 Lab welcomed members of the DHIS2 Extensibility Team from the University of Oslo (UiO) for an intensive developer sync session aimed at fostering collaboration, knowledge exchange, and alignment on global DHIS2 platform advancements.

The session featured in-depth discussions on the evolution of the DHIS2 technology stack—from the legacy pre-Angular framework to the current App Platform. The UDSM team presented local innovations including the iAdapter, Universal Health API, and iCareConnect+ EMR, which has been adopted into the postgraduate curriculum at the University of Dar es Salaam.

During the engagement, both teams exchanged demonstrations of emerging tools and frameworks. The UDSM Lab showcased a Dashboard Library for Angular-based apps, a Flutter SDK, Web SDK, Angular UI Wrapper, and a newly structured Tracker Model. In turn, UiO provided updates on the DHIS2 Core roadmap, covering enhancements to the datastore, improvements to the route API, the introduction of program webhooks, and new tools for FHIR integration, among other extensibility features.

Agreed Way Forward

To strengthen and sustain global DHIS2 development collaboration, the UDSM and UiO teams outlined the following joint actions:

  1. Establish a continuous feedback mechanism for addressing challenges in local and global DHIS2 implementations.

  2. Monitor DHIS2 platform changelogs to ensure timely awareness of system updates and changes.

  3. Promote regular technical knowledge exchange between the two teams, enhancing mutual learning and alignment with international standards.

  4. Support ongoing collaborative development of scalable, secure, and interoperable digital health solutions for diverse health system needs.

This developer sync marks a continued commitment between the UDSM DHIS2 Lab and the University of Oslo to advance open-source digital health platforms that are both globally aligned and locally impactful.
