The SADC Secretariat, through the TIMS Project, developed the Cross-Border Referral System (CBRS) to enhance tuberculosis (TB) management among mobile populations, particularly in the mining sector across 16 member states.
The system facilitates patient tracking, secure medical record storage, and seamless referrals using cloud-based and biometric technologies. However, challenges related to scalability, flexibility, data management, and reporting have emerged.
To address these, the University of Dar es Salaam’s Department of Computer Science and Engineering has been contracted to redesign and enhance the system with modern technologies. This initiative strengthens regional healthcare infrastructure, supports universal health coverage, and improves cross-border disease management within the SADC region.
