Strengthening Population-Based Cancer Registration, Digital Data Management Workshop

A four-day National Cancer Registry Workshop was successfully conducted at Kibo Peak Palace Hotel in Morogoro, Tanzania, bringing together key stakeholders to strengthen cancer surveillance across the country.

The workshop focused on building capacity in population-based cancer registration (PBCR), digital data management, and data use for decision-making. Participants enhanced their skills in:

⭐️Cancer coding and staging

⭐️PBCR standards and best practices

⭐️Use of CanReg5 and the DHIS2 Oncology Module

⭐️Interoperability workflows

⭐️Data quality assurance and validation

⭐️Data analysis and Age-Standardized Rate (ASR) calculation

⭐️Reporting and use of cancer data for policy and planning

A key highlight was the demonstration of how DHIS2 can serve as a centralised platform for cancer data capture while remaining fully integrated with CanReg5 to ensure robust, standardised, and high-quality cancer data management.

The workshop concluded with clear and actionable plans to strengthen cancer surveillance systems nationwide — reinforcing the power of digital health, collaboration, and data-driven decision-making in improving cancer control.
